The Nanaimo Global Film Festival (February 22-24) is offering a sneak preview at one of its featured films in a special showing on Thursday, January 24. Un Poquito de Tanta Verdad (translation: A Little Bit of So Much Truth) is a film about a community in Mexico that galvanized to protect their democratic rights.
This documentary was shot in the summer of 2006 in Mexico's poor state of Oaxaca, when 70,000 teachers went on strike to protest government neglect of their students who suffered from malnutrition and lacked basic needs. Taking over a radio station, they spread their message and within 2 days, 300,000 people, including housewives, indigenous communities, health workers, farmers, and students, took to the streets to join the teachers' non-violent protest. Over the summer they took other media into their own hands, using them to organize, mobilize, and ultimately defend their grassroots struggle for social, cultural, and economic justice.
The film lasts 93 minutes and will be shown starting at 7:30 p.m. at Malaspina University College, in Building 200, Room 203 (Theatre) Admission is by donation, $10 is suggested. The Nanaimo District Teachers Association and CHLY Radio are cosponsoring the film. Teachers and community radio were pivotal components of the Oaxaca story.
