Don't miss the 4th Annual Nanaimo Global Film Festival's exciting weekend of films starting this Friday night, February 23, and running through to Sunday, February 24 at Malaspina University College. Hours: Friday night 7 p.m., Saturday 10 - 5 p.m., Saturday night 7 p.m., Sunday 10 - 3 p.m.
There will be 38 thought provoking and award winning social justice and environmental films and several workshops, on topics ranging from Africa to Canada, from whales to farming, from caring for our planet to changing our society. They offer hopeful glimpses and inspiring stories of ways that humans all over the planet are making a difference and creating change without waiting for their governments.
Friday evening films include Sacred Trust by 2007 student film award winner Monica Wysotski; Trading Democracy for Corporate Rule by local film maker Paul Manly; and the main feature China Blue, clandestinely filmed inside sweatshops in China (sponsored by the Nanaimo, Duncan & District Labour Council)
Films and workshops run all day Saturday and Sunday, in addition to a Fair Trade and Social Justice Bazaar in the college cafeteria (open at (9:30 a.m both mornings). Lunch by Thirsty Camel, snacks and hot and cold beverages by the Nan Go Grannies will be available in the Bazaar both days.
Tickets are available for a professionally catered dinner by the Basque ($20), for those who want to indulge themselves and extend their film watching from Saturday into the evening without leaving the campus. Call 753-3371 or see the website to reserve your dinner ticket.
Saturday evening films are both about homelessness: Homeless in Nanaimo by 2007 community film award winner Keri Bennett, and The Cats of Mirikitani, the poignant story of Jimmy Mirikitani, an 85-year-old Japanese American artist surviving on the streets of New York city. Fair Trade coffee, tea and organic chocolates will be available at both evening performances.
Weekend passes ($30), 2 day passes ($25) and a single day pass ($20) are available starting January 28 until noon on February 22 at Green Communities, Port Place; Malaspina Students' Union; Nanaimo Arts Council, Rutherford Mall; Van Isle Video, Bowen Road; and Gabriola Artworks.
Passes for Friday and Saturday evening can be purchased at the door at the Malaspina Theatre (Building 310) before 7 p.m., and all other passes will be on sale at the festival table in the cafeteria from Saturday morning throughout the weekend. Low income passes are available at the Student's Union, Green Communities, and at the festival.
